Wander
the cobbled streets and loose yourself in the amazing architecture and
history. ·
Climb up
to the Castle district (Toompea), visit the Russian Cathedral and enjoy the views
over the medieval skyline bristling with church spires and towers. ·
Enjoy a
cold beer and bask in the sun in a street café in the main Town Square
(Raekoja Plats) overlooking the medieval square and 14th century
Town Hall. ·
Scale St
Olaf’s, the highest church tower in Europe (at the time) or the Town Hall
Tower for wonderful views over the city. ·
Take a
luxury sauna on the top floor of the Reval Hotel Olumpia overlooking the
city. ·
Laze on
the white sand beach at Pirita on a hot summers day (just 6kms from the Old
Town) or just the watch the sunset over the city. ·
Visit
the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great’s palace and landscaped gardens at
Kadriorg. ·
Listen
to some classical music in the 13th century Toomkirik (Dome
Church) which offers free performances most days at lunchtime. ·
Visit
the Museum of the Occupation, a modern audio-visual museum telling the tragic
story of Estonia’s occupation by the Nazis and later the Soviet Union. ·
Take a
day trip on the high speed ferry to Helsinki in Finland (1hr 25 mins – around
€30 return) and hit the shops. ·
Take a
ferry to historic St Petersburg in Russia (from April 2004). (See ‘Getting
Around’ section). ·
Take a
trip out into the countryside and visit the Lahemaa National Park with its
beautiful white sand beaches, picturesque rivers, forests and lakes. ·
Visit
the once-secret Soviet nuclear submarine base at Paldiski (not finally closed
down until 1995). ·
Take a
short ferry trip out to the island of Naissaar with its unblemished beaches
and nature trails. ·
Visit
some of the many museums, churches, art galleries, botanical gardens or the
zoo. |
