St Ives - Pendeen (B3306)

Rugged, remote scenery, tiny farms, abandoned tin mines and rugged cliffs. Zennor has an interesting ‘way-side’ museum with display of local folklore and history and an historic church complete with its own Mermaid legend! The Gurnard’ s Head Hotel is a great stopping place for lunch (large beer garden) and the one mile walk down to the Gurnard’ s Head cliffs is well worthwhile (see Walks section). At Pendeen, take side road to right signposted ‘Pendeen Lighthouse’ for spectacular views along the rugged cliffs. The Geevor Mine Museum in Pendeen provides an interesting introduction to the Cornish mining industry with guided tours of the surface mine workings and underground tours (by arrangement). It is open 10:30am to 5:30pm in summer.

Mousehole - Porthcurno (B3315)

From Penzance, follow signs through Newlyn to Mousehole. Mousehole is a quaint fishing village - worth a walk around the alleyways. The Ship Inn is a traditional Cornish pub with beamed ceilings. From Mousehole, head inland and along coast to Lamorna Cove - tiny, unspoilt fishing cove with strong artistic community. Take a stroll along the pebbled beach and pier. Back along the B3315, look out for the Merry Maidens ancient stone circle in a field on the left hand side. This circle is older than Stonehenge! (c 4000 years old!). From Treen, take the road to Porthcurno, park in the car park and walk down to the beach - you won’t be disappointed. This is the best beach in Britain, we think. Overlooking the beach is the spectacular open air Minack Theatre. Performances are held throughout the summer and are an amazing sight at night as the moon light glints off the Atlantic as a backdrop! To find out what’s on at the theatre tel 01736 810471 or pick up a leaflet at the Tourist Info Centre.

Pendeen - Land’s End (B3306 & A30)

At Botallack, 2 miles from Pendeen take road off to right and follow the lane towards the sea. This will take you past Manor Farm where the TV series ‘Poldark’ was filmed. At the end of the lane, walk down towards the cliffs for an amazing view over the Atlantic and Botallack’ s listed, abandoned Crown Mines (tin mines perched precariously on the edge of steep, rugged granite cliffs). Great photo opportunity, especially at sunset. Follow B3306 onwards to St Just and follow signs from main square of this town to Cape Cornwall. This rocky promontory is rarely busy and has wonderful 270 degree views of the coastline and Land’s End. A great place to relax in the sun. Follow B3306 onto Sennen and Land’s End. Land’s End (Tel: 01736 871501) tends to be very busy in summer and charges admission but has great views, exhibitions, audio-visual experiences (‘The Last Labyrinth’), suspension bridge, children’s play area, rare animals display and curio shops. Good for a few hours.
