West Cornwall has
the highest concentration of ancient antiquities of any area in the UK. There
are various good guidebooks available but for an introduction to the local
bronze and iron age sites try the following; Chun Castle (iron
age castle) Spectacular views
across most of West Cornwall are available from this 2000 year old fort. (See
Walks section for directions). The granite walls are
still 6ft high in parts. Park car at Bosullow Farm for 1/2 mile walk to the
hilltop fort. The route is marked by white stones. Chysauster Iron
Age Village Interesting
insight into iron age life. Signposted from the inland St Ives - Penzance road (B3311). Merry Maidens
Stone Circle Located next to
the B3315 between Newlyn and Porthcurno in a field on the left hand side of
the road, this 4000 year old granite circle is a fascinating sight. It is
actually older than Stonehenge! Trencom Hill Iron
Age Fort Visible on the
skyline from Hayle and many parts of West Cornwall, this iron age fort offers
spectacular views over West Cornwall, St Ives and St Michael’s Mount. The
fort is reputed to be the home of the legendary giant Tregeagle. Watch out
for his saucepans, foot-print and seat in the rock formations at the top of
the hill. Pendennis Castle,
Falmouth Excellently
preserved Tudor castle with great views out over the Fal estuary. Good place
for picnic in the grounds. |
